Susan Belau Reception

Susan Belau’s work has been described as an, ”intimate glimpse of semi-abstract natural forms, described in film-like layers of ink.” -Shelley Langdale, Associate Curator of Prints and Drawings, Philadelphia Museum of Art.
The foundation of her work is the connection between the literal descriptions of interval. Her subjects include plants and structures found in the urban garden and domesticated/cultivated surroundings, and explores the spaces between branches, negative shapes, layers of ink—and the abstract and intangible notions of time, anticipation and moments lost.
Susan Belau received her M.F.A. in Printmaking from University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She has studied printmaking at Santa Reparata in Florence, Italy, and trained as a printer at Paulson Press in Berkeley, California. Since receiving her MFA, Ms. Belau has maintained an active studio practice – exhibiting work nationally and internationally. She has received the Phelan Award for Excellence in Printmaking and been awarded fellowships at Kala Art Institute, Berkeley, California and Women’s Studio Workshop, Rosendale, New York. Her work is in private and public collections throughout the United States, including the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Ms. Belau is an Assistant Professor of Art at San Francisco State University.
